A text from the executive said a lot: “Was going to write emails on plane. Now flight cancelled. Driving family to Colorado. Wish me luck.”

The “luck” of which the leader was referring, of course, was the realization that he would be confined to a car . . . with his family . . . for an extended-period-of-time.

For anyone who walks into their home well after the dishes have been cleared from dinner, says hello to kids on his or her way to check evening emails, then leaves in the morning for the office before anyone awakes; such a family trip could seem daunting.

The calendar says it’s time to count our blessings. That’s easy to do when family is near, the table piled with food, and everyone agrees: Don’t talk about who or what makes us angry. Let’s just watch the football game or plug in our favorite DVD.

Did Tim Sloan, the new CEO of Wells Fargo, tell us a lie? As the sell-at-all-costs sales culture at the banking giant became known to the public, Sloan stated “I’m not aware of any overbearing sales culture” at the institution. Yet, with the data we have now, it’s clear that employees worked in an environment where they were pressured to take unethical action.

The end is near: You can see 2016’s finish line on the horizon. For many teams this is “rally time,” meaning we need everyone super focused and giving their best efforts if we’re going to hit our goals.

While every team is under immense pressure to finish the year strong, far too many will fall short of success. And you can pick them out of the crowd quickly: They lack a specific focus and energy necessary to achieve the team’s purpose.

At this very moment leaders everywhere are taking pause and asking questions they don’t always ask. News that employees of Wells Fargo created fictitious accounts – and put honest consumers at risk in the process – should have every leader assessing important dynamics within their organization. Yet, will they see the whole picture – and ask better questions? We must if we are to succeed.
