In cities around the country there is a major promotion to encourage people to buy from local retailers and businesses. The buzz in commercials and other media outlets is all about “shopping small.”  Small Business Saturday was founded in 2010 by American Express and now has the support of a number of major partners.  It is celebrated every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving which this year is November 30th.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you always had a steady flow of business? A pace that is manageable?  Deadlines which are realistic? Forget it. It is not going to happen. It used to be that I could count on certain seasonal rushes. I knew there would be a mad dash to spend money and finish projects before my client’s year end or other peak times. I could also predict when business would be slow.

Small business owners, like me, have found that it is critical not to be tied to the geographic area where the business is located. With all the available tools it is easier than ever to have clients in far-away places. But, you still need to show up from time to time. Unlike, bigger operations that have travel resources we are often left to fend for ourselves. Lately, I have been traveling a great deal so I decided to take the best tips I have learned and share them.

About a week ago our IT supplier sent an e-mail to everyone on my staff warning them about a computer virus. It certainly was not the first such notice we have gotten, but it was by far one of the scariest. The virus is called Crypto Locker and is a ransom ware virus. Once on your computer it encrypts your files and demands $100-$300, or more, in order to decrypt them. The payment is due in 100 hours. The hackers are literally holding businesses and individuals hostage
